How it all started...
We began as a small group in the 1940's under the leadership of Bishop Theodore Simmons. The church began in a humble setting and quickly experienced revival and growth. Over the years the body voted to install Pastor Harley Weir as pastor, who served for approximately 15 years in this capacity. Pastor Weir later took an honorary role as Bishop when Pastor Merrill Weir, Sr. took the leadership of the church.
During Pastor Merrill Weir, Sr.'s leadership the church built the current building and moved in to a new sanctuary in 1992-93. Pastor Merrill Weir was a dynamic preacher and expositor of the Word of God; preaching both at the home church, Christ Temple Church, and across the country at revivals and conferences.
Pastor Merrill Weir, Sr. remained senior pastor until moving to Bishop in 2010 following the passing of his lovely wife Suzanne. It was at this time that the Senior Pastor role was handed to our current Pastor, Rev. Merrill Weir, Jr. and his wife, Julie.

Expanding the vision...
In early 2020, Pastor Merrill Weir felt led to change the name of the church from Christ Temple Church to The Sanctuary - Apostolic of Terre Haute. This change was an addition to the Christ Temple Church, Inc. umbrella. The change without question brought with it a shift in the community's recognition of the church.
We have seen many first time guests and a real excitement as we reach our city with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our goal to truly be a sanctuary, a safe place, a refuge to the City of Terre Haute, IN.

Where we are headed...
In early 2022, Pastor Merrill had begun to develop a burden and a vision to remodel the church. After much prayer and planning over the course of the year, doors began to open and God began to prepare the people and the budget to allow this transition. We are currently undergoing the process of this renovation and are excited at what God is doing.
